Villiers Stakes for rejuvenated Zanbagh

Sunday 15 November 2015, 3:39pm

A return to high-level racing awaits Zanbagh who has reignited her career with victory at her first start for trainer John Thompson.

Trained by the late Guy Walter to win the Group Three Keith Nolan Classic and run second in two Oaks, Zanbagh came to Thompson's Randwick stable just a couple of months ago.

After Walter's death in May last year, the mare was sent to Patrick Payne at Ballarat, but after she failed to recapture form she was put on the retired list.

Thompson was surprised to get the call from Sandy and Kathy Tait to train the five-year-old and even more surprised by how well she progressed in her preparation leading into her first run for him at Rosehill on Saturday.

"She is a lovely clean-winded horse and is thriving in the stable," Thompson said.

"Even after her race she didn't have a blow at all.

"We will look at the Villiers Stakes and the Summer Cup with her now.

"Those races should suit her."

Zanbagh came from near last to win Saturday's November Hcp (1350m), her first victory over a distance shorter than 1600m.

She was reunited with Kathy O'Hara who rode her early in her career and also rode her mother, Australian Oaks winner Wild Iris, in the 2005 Caulfield Cup.

"It means a lot to me to win on this horse for Sandy Tait," O'Hara said.

The Group Two Villiers Stakes (1600m) is on December 12 with the Group Three Summer Cup (2000m) two weeks later.
