Turn Me Loose wins G1 Emirates Stakes

Saturday 7 November 2015, 4:47pm

A rollercoaster spring carnival for New Zealand trainer Murray Baker has culminated in another Group One win with Turn Me Loose leading all the way in the Emirates Stakes.

It was one of two Group One successes for Baker during the Melbourne spring, the other Mongolian Khan's Caulfield Cup victory.

Mongolian Khan was later forced out of the Melbourne Cup because of a bout of colic and the four-year-old is expected to remain in a veterinary clinic for another week.

Baker, who trains in partnership with Andrew Forsman, says Mongolian Khan isn't in the clear yet but is on the improve and heading in the right direction.

Turn Me Loose held off the fast-finishing Politeness in the final Group One of the Melbourne spring carnival to add to his Group Two Crystal Mile win and Seymour Cup win this preparation in Victoria.

In winning the Emirates, Turn Me Loose gave jockey Kerrin McEvoy a milestone 50th Group One win.

"It's a nice personal achievement and it's good to get it done this spring," McEvoy said.

McEvoy, whose first top-level success came in the Melbourne Cup on Brew 15 years ago, got the opportunity at the expense of Turn Me Loose's regular rider Opie Bosson who was suspended.

"I'd just like to thank Murray Baker and Opie Bosson. I'm feeling for you Opie," McEvoy said.

"It's a nice pick-up for me anyway.

"He was a little bit aggressive early on. He's just a bold-going kiwi and likes to get out there and make every post a winner.

"It's hard to lead at Flemington in a Group One and he had to do it the tough way."

McEvoy said Turn Me Loose ($9) felt the pinch in the last 20 metres and the jockey could hear Politeness ($10) charging but they hung on by a half-neck.

Rock Sturdy ($31) finished another neck away, leaving Sydney trainer Joe Pride settling for thirds in Saturday's two Group One races with Terravista filling the minor placing in the Darley Classic.

The Cox Plate was initially a consideration for Turn Me Loose, winner of the Group One 2000 Guineas in New Zealand, but he missed a planned start in New Zealand in August which meant the Emirates Stakes (1600m) became his target.

"He's so big and strong and runs those sectionals which makes it hard for horses behind him," Baker said.

"They were coming at him. I was praying, but he kept going."

Baker is convinced Turn Me Loose will run 2000m and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes is on the radar in Sydney in the autumn.

Turn Me Loose also holds a nomination for the Hong Kong Mile in December.

Politeness' jockey Craig Newitt felt the mare was a little unlucky after striking traffic early in the straight before charging home.
