Chris Munce's personal experience riding stayers has convinced him to retain senior jockey Jeff Lloyd for the mount on Perplexity at Doomben on Saturday.

Lloyd turned in a masterful ride when he steered the Munce-trained Perplexity to win over 2000m at Doomben two weeks ago.

Perplexity is among the fancied runners for the Brisbane Marriott Hotel Handicap (2200m) where he has topweight of 59kg.

"I know he is starting to go up in the weights but he has earned it," Munce said.

"There was a temptation to claim but he does have only five kilograms over the limit."

As a jockey, Munce won most of Australia's top staying races including a Melbourne Cup on Jezabeel and Caulfield Cup on Descarado.

"In my experience, often stayers can go better for senior riders. Jeff was able to judge the pace beautifully last time," he said.

"Perplexity isn't a hard horse to ride but he does need the pace on and Jeff ensured that happened.

"Sometimes younger riders can find stayers pulling on them."

Munce has done a good job with Perplexity since the stayer was transferred from Sydney earlier this year.

The gelding has won three times for Munce and in the process collected more than $150,000 prize money.

"He is racing well and I don't think we have seen the best of him because I really believe he wants 2400 metres or even 3200 metres," Munce said.

"There is a temptation to take him to Sydney for the Summer Cup but we will probably have another start here and then look at races like the Caloundra Cup and Queensland Cup next winter."

Meanwhile, trainer Ben Currie has booked star apprentice James Orman to ride Col 'N' Lil in the race as the mare attempts to break her open company duck.

Currie has always believed Col 'N' Lil would develop into a stayer and ran her in last season's Queensland Oaks where she led to the home turn.

"James is riding very well and every little bit helps with a claim," Currie said.
