Disposition to back up in Emirates Stakes

Saturday 31 October 2015, 2:17pm

Trainer Lee Freedman is using a successful blueprint to try to land his third Group One Emirates Stakes victory.

Disposition won Saturday's Group Three Guvera Stakes (1400m) at Flemington and is set to back-up in the Group One Emirates on the final day of the Melbourne Cup carnival.

"We won it (the Emirates Stakes) twice with Pontormo and Warned backing them up off this race," Freedman said.

"This is quite a gross horse and I think it's quite a good method.

"He'll actually go well on the back-up."

Warned (1987) and Pontormo (1991) were both placed in the 1400m race when it was run on Melbourne Cup day before winning the Group One on the final day of the carnival.

Disposition was well backed from $3.70 to start the $3 favourite on Saturday after finishing second in consecutive Group One races at his past two starts.

Damien Oliver settled the horse further back than expected and was last coming to the home turn but saved ground near the inside as most of the field scouted wide.

Disposition raced through along the fence and he and San Diego ($13) kicked clear to battle it out with Disposition scoring by half a neck.

Hosting ($51) was another 2-3/4 lengths away third.

Freedman admitted he was concerned coming to the corner.

"Last on the fence in a seven furlong race here isn't the ideal spot but he (Oliver) knew what he was doing and fortunately the field opened up a bit," Freedman said.

"One thing about this horse, he does try very hard."
