Mudlark to the fore in Ipswich victory

Students of wet-track pedigrees hit the jackpot when Thessaly scored an easy win at Ipswich on Wednesday.

Thessaly had not finished closer than fourth in five previous starts but was heavily backed to start $4 to win on a bog track.

She repaid the confidence scoring an easy two lengths victory over the favourite Miss Oberon ($2.30).

Thessaly is by the noted wet-track sire Sequalo out of the mare Thermopylae who has produced a string of winners including mudlarks Vipera Gold and Show Of Strength.

Owner-trainer Lyn Tipper also bred Thessaly and said the mare had never been on a wet track before.

"All of her dam's offspring have loved wet tracks so we had some confidence. And we put blinkers on her today," Tipper said.

Stormy Grey, the $2.20 favourite, also lived up to his breeding when he won the Class 4 (1350m).

The gelding's dam Gentle Wind was one of the best middle-distance horses racing in Brisbane during the late 1990s and she won a Toowoomba Cup.

"His mum was a good stayer but this one seems best around the 1300m to 1400m distances," trainer Jim Hanna said.

Trainer Garnet Taylor thanked rival jockey Tegan Harrison after James Is Blonde ($5.50) won the Benchmark 70.

"Tegan rode him last start and suggested we put a tongue tie on him. It seems to have done the trick today. Unfortunately, for Tegan she had another ride (Extra Shot) and couldn't handle him today," he said.

Michael Cahill replaced Harrison and showed while he is approaching veteran class he hasn't lost his nerve by driving through a needle-eye opening to win.

Harrison got her reward when she led all the way to win on Hidden Reign in the Maiden Plate (1100m).

It was her 16th winner this season for trainer Tony Gollan who has a long lead in the Brisbane trainers premiership.
