Hawkes stable, Berry team up with 2YO Star

It wasn't quite Chautauqua, but Hawkes Racing and Tommy Berry combined for an important victory at Randwick on Saturday less than 24 hours after teaming up to win the Manikato Stakes.

Star Turn ($2.90) atoned for his last-start defeat with a three-length triumph in Saturday's $150,000 Pierro Plate at Randwick, a race worth almost double the prize money of a regular Saturday event.

The inflated cheque virtually guarantees Star Turn enough stakes for a start in the Golden Slipper.

"Whether we head towards the Magic Millions or put him away and head to the Slipper with that prize money under out belt, that's what we have to contend with," co-trainer Michael Hawkes said.

"He's a tough horse and he's definitely going places."

Star Turn was slow to muster speed at his debut and was again tardy out of the barriers.

This time Berry opted to stoke him up to sit outside the leader and that tactic made the difference.

"When he was slow out Tommy did the right thing, he gave him a dig in the ribs to get up there," Hawkes said.

"He's an exciting colt by an in-form sire and you can only win."

Godolphin horses filled the placings with Medaille ($15) second, a half length in front of odds-on favourite Chipanda.

Star Turn's win came a day after stablemate Chautauqua powered away with the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley to give Berry his first Group One win in Victoria.
