Michelle Payne prepares for riding return

Wednesday 16 January 2013, 2:56pm

Victorian jockey Michelle Payne will make her comeback to riding on Sunday aboard a horse she helped prepare for a first-up Tasmanian win.

Payne will ride Fieldmaster for her brother Patrick in the $25,000 Summer Cup at Hobart.

The Group One-winning rider has been out of the saddle since suffering minor factures to the outside of her T5 and T6 vertebrae in a race fall at Ararat almost four months ago.

She was reportedly contemplating retirement but spending time with her brother's Tasmanian carnival team has fuelled her ambition to keep riding.

"I'm not really put off by the injuries," she told Sky Sports Radio.

"I just think that hopefully my bad luck is out of the way and I'm just really excited to get back out there."

Payne has been overseeing the campaign of Fieldmaster and stablemate Cellarmaster.

Steven Arnold rode Fieldmaster to a first-up win in the Devonport Cup last week and the six-year-old is headed towards the Hobart and Launceston Cups.

"He needs to race on Sunday to keep his fitness up," Payne said.

"Spending a bit of time with the horses here in Tasmania for the past couple of weeks will make (Sunday) a bit more special, I think."
