G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes for Counterattack

Saturday 17 October 2015, 4:54pm

A focused Counterattack will be given the chance to emulate his Group One-winning siblings after his return to winning form at Randwick.

Chris Waller trained both Shellscrape and Red Tracer for Geoff and Mary Grimish who also race Counterattack which now heads to the Coolmore Stud Stakes.

The winner of the Listed Heritage Stakes last month, Counterattack was left in Exosphere's wake in the Roman Consul Stakes at his next start.

The blinkers went on for Saturday's Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) and the $6 topweight overhauled Spill The Beans ($16) to win by three-quarters of a length.

The favourite Hellbent ($1.80) held third another 1-3/4 lengths away and never looked like troubling the judge.

"The blinkers have really sharpened him up as they did for Shellscrape and Red Tracer," Waller's racing manager Liam Prior said.

"It seems to be a family thing. Red Tracer needed them early in her career.

"Chris has wanted to put them on this fellow for a while and after he worked well in them he decided the time was right.

"He will join Japonisme in the Coolmore at Flemington in two weeks now."

Waller has won the past two Coolmore Stud Stakes with Zoustar in 2013 and Brazen Beau last year, both of whom are now at stud.

Shellscrape ran third in the 2009 Coolmore Stud and won the Galaxy the following autumn.

Red Tracer's biggest win came in the 2013 Group One Myer Classic at Flemington with the mare also a multiple stakes winner.
