Golden Slipper numbers up for 2016 edition

Thursday 8 October 2015, 4:47pm

First acceptances for the 2016 Golden Slipper have increased 17 per cent on last year's figure, the Australian Turf Club says.

There are 1461 two-year-olds left in contention for the $3.5 million race compared to 1248 at the same pay-up stage last year.

Godolphin has 156 youngsters still nominated while Gai Waterhouse has 112 first acceptances.

Other trainers with significant numbers are Peter and Paul Snowden (76), Chris Waller (72), Hawkes Racing (67), David Hayes and Tom Dabernig (64) and Mick Price (50).

Snitzel heads the list as the sire with the most first acceptances at 83, followed by Fastnet Rock (77), Sebring (61) and first-season sire Smart Missile (59).

ATC chief executive Darren Pearce said the increase in nominations was a pleasing result.

"The Golden Slipper is not only the one race that shapes the industry, but is also one that owners dream of winning," he said.

The 2016 Golden Slipper will be run at Rosehill on March 19.
