Spill The Beans looking for Consul upset

Friday 2 October 2015, 1:39pm

In recent times, the Roman Consul Stakes has been a pivotal step in the three-year-old seasons of some of Australia's future stars at stud.

The honour roll includes Exceed And Excel (2003), Fastnet Rock (2004), Foxwedge (2011), Zoustar (2013) and Brazen Beau (2014).

Godolphin's Exosphere is the dominant favourite for Saturday's edition of the Group Two race at Randwick but trainer Gerald Ryan is looking to Spill The Beans to showcase his talents against the Golden Rose winner.

By Snitzel, Spill The Beans is out of Miss Dodwell, a half-sister to Blab who is the dam of Saturday's Flight Stakes favourite Speak Fondly.

"He's a laid-back colt but whether he's mature enough and race smart enough for a this, well we'll find out," Ryan said.

"He is owned by a stud and is a breeding proposition but whether he gets to a Group One race this preparation remains to be seen.

"This is a big test for him against a horse like Exosphere and we will find out where he sits."

The winner of his first two starts earlier this year, Spill The Beans is raced by Arrowfield Stud, the home of his sire Snitzel who Ryan trained to win the 2006 Oakleigh Plate.

Snitzel was a precocious juvenile and began his career with victory in the 2004 Breeders' Plate on the corresponding program.

Ryan said if Spill The Beans did perform well, he could head to Melbourne for the Coolmore Stud Stakes at the end of the month.

"That's an option but there are other races like the Blue Sapphire down there as well," he said.

Chris Waller trained Zoustar and Brazen Beau who both went on to win the Coolmore and set up lucrative stud careers.

There is no such pressure for Waller's Roman Consul runners this year with Japonisme and Counterattack both geldings.
