Waller in blinkered approach with import

Friday 25 September 2015, 5:35pm

Flamingo Star has forced Chris Waller to make a gear switch the trainer didn't think was possible for a race he didn't expect the German import to be running in.

After unplaced runs in the Tramway Stakes and Cameron Handicap, Flamingo Star will wear blinkers for the first time in his four-start Australian career at Rosehill on Saturday.

It's a piece of headgear that worked for the entire in Germany in four wins, including two at Group Three level.

"The way he was when he first came to me he wouldn't have settled with blinkers on early," Waller said.

"But he had success in them in Germany and now's the time to try him in them here."

Flamingo Star ran ninth of 10 in the Cameron Handicap at Newcastle yet Waller was taken with the horse's last 100 metres to finish less than three lengths from the winner.

But the result still turned spring plans for Flamingo Star upside down.

"When I put him out in the winter I didn't think he'd be running a week before the Epsom," Waller said.

"I thought he would have been going around in the George Main last week and he would have been one of the spruik horses for the Epsom.

"We're backing him up in eight days in the Shannon and I wouldn't be expecting to back him up in another seven days into an Epsom."

Waller said the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield on October was now a more attractive Group One target.
