Perignon get chance in Furious Stakes

Monday 14 September 2015, 2:11pm

Speak Fondly's second in the Golden Rose bodes well for Perignon as she heads to the Tea Rose Stakes.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Perignon has twice finished second to Speak Fondly who has begun the new season in style with wins in the Silver Shadow and Furious Stakes before beating all but Exosphere in Saturday's $1 million Golden Rose.

Perignon ran Speak Fondly to half a head in the Magic Night Stakes in March and was making ground late when 2-3/4 lengths second in the Furious.

In the absence of the Gai Waterhouse-trained filly in Saturday's Group Two race at Randwick, Perignon gets her chance to shine.

"Her first run back behind Speak Fondly in the Furious was great and she came through the race in terrific order," Ryan said.

"I couldn't be happier with her and the 1400 metres will suit."

Ryan also has Widden Stakes winner Fireworks in the Tea Rose and is keen to see her step up in distance.

"The distance won't be a problem for Fireworks but I would like to see her on a better track," Ryan said.

Fireworks finished fifth in the Furious which was run on a softer track than when she won the Widden Stakes in January.

With rain forecast in Sydney later in the week, Ryan may not get his wish.

There were 18 fillies entered on Monday for the Tea Rose which has a capacity field of 16.

While Speak Fondly will be missing, Waterhouse has entered three fillies including Kimberley Star who finished second to her stablemate in the Silver Shadow and third to Metallic Crown in the Group Three Ming Dynasty Quality.

Her other nominations are Flamboyant Lass and Sempre Libera.
