Setinum out to book another shot at Gr 1

Thursday 10 September 2015, 4:59pm

Four-year-old Setinum can earn another start in a Group One race at Caulfield if he runs to expectations in the Bobbie Lewis Quality.

The Shane Fliedner-trained Setinum drops back in distance in Saturday's Group Two 1200m straight track sprint at Flemington after finishing 11th, beaten only three lengths, in the Memsie Stakes last start in his first try at racing's top level.

Fliedner said things didn't pan out how he would have liked from the outside barrier for Setinum who ended up racing outside the leader in the Memsie before sticking to his task in the straight.

Fliedner was happy with the gelding's performance and believes he's better suited when he can relax and finish off strongly.

He has elected to drop Setinum back in distance on Saturday to make sure the gelding relaxes, and then plans to step him back up in trip at his next start.

Setinum won the Listed Bendigo Guineas last campaign and claimed the Listed Regal Roller Stakes first-up this preparation at Caulfield with a strong finish.

He has only raced once down the straight, finishing fourth when Fliedner elected to drop him back slightly in distance that day in an 1100m Listed race for three-year-old's during the autumn, won by Pittsburg Flyer.

"He ran a pretty good race down the straight the last time he raced there," Fliedner said.

"He's ready for it. He's a pretty fit horse and pretty healthy.

"If he runs up to our expectations on Saturday he'll go to Caulfield a fortnight later for the Rupert Clarke over 1400 metres.

"I couldn't be happier with the horse."

The Group One Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes is run under handicap conditions.

Setinum is a $13 chance in the Bobbie Lewis with Rich Enuff favourite at $3.30 ahead of Group One William Reid Stakes winner Lucky Hussler at $6.50.

Rich Enuff finished second to Bounding first-up after a long lay-off and won the Danehill Stakes at the corresponding meeting last year.
