New training track opened at Werribee

Thursday 10 September 2015, 4:25pm

A new all-weather training track has been opened at Werribee racecourse ahead of the arrival of the international horses for this year's Melbourne spring carnival.

Japanese horses Fame Game and Hokko Brave will be the first of the overseas raiders to land in Melbourne with the duo set to arrive on Saturday week and be based at the Werribee quarantine centre.

On Thursday, Victoria's minister for racing Martin Pakula opened the $1.3 million CLOPF track which is made of a mixture of sand and fibres.

The training surface is on the inside of the course proper and Racing Victoria's executive general manager - racing, Greg Carpenter, said it would enhance the facilities at Werribee.

"The availability of an all-weather training track, in addition to the existing turf track, will provide international horses with facilities commensurate to local training centres and other major international destinations, while redistributing some of the traffic otherwise destined for the turf track," Carpenter said.

There are six race meetings scheduled for Werribee's course proper this season, including the Werribee Cup in December.
