Top trainer Matt Dunn will require facial surgery after being kicked in the face by a horse.

Dunn was working with veteran galloper Velrosso at his Murwillumbah stables when the horse lashed out.

His wife Keira said that Dunn was in hospital at Tweed Heads and would see a specialist on Thursday.

"It is nothing that can't be fixed," Keira Dunn told Brisbane's RadioTAB.

Dunn suffered facial fractures and swelling in the incident but is expected to make a full recovery.
