A Listed 1400m race at Flemington is the preferred Flemington option for Group One-placed Odyssey Moon who will be out to press his claims as a Caulfield Guineas contender.

The colt is also nominated for the Danehill Stakes over 1200m at Flemington on Saturday but trainer Rod Northam is planning to start the three-year-old in Saturday's Listed Pin & Win Stakes (1400m).

"I'm 95 per cent sure he'll run in the Listed race," Northam said.

Damien Oliver, who rode Odyssey Moon in two Group Ones last season and also in the colt's first-up McKenzie Stakes placing, is booked to ride the son of Snitzel where he has topweight of 58kg.

Odyssey Moon finished third in the McKenzie Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley first-up in his first Melbourne start and Northam was impressed with the way the colt kept finding the line after being caught wide without cover.

"It's pretty hard for horses to finish races off like that when they sit three-deep at Moonee Valley," Northam said.

"Damien Oliver was a big rap for his run and he has ridden him for me since and he's happy that he has come on nicely.

"We're going into Saturday feeling pretty confident."

Northam believes Odyssey Moon will appreciate racing at Flemington.

The trainer is looking at Odyssey Moon having two starts at 1400m, on Saturday and then in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude, ahead of his main target of the Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

"Then we'll be well and truly sure he'll be rock-hard fit for that race," Northam said.

Odyssey Moon ran in the three Group Ones for juveniles in Sydney during the autumn with his best result a dead-heat for second in the Sires' Produce Stakes at Randwick.

The Caulfield Guineas picture is continually changing and Group One winners Pride Of Dubai and Vancouver have both been ruled out of the spring already.

"If he stays sound and can hold his form, you'd have to think he's got to be in the mix for sure," Northam said.

Odyssey Moon had blinkers on first-up but Northam is likely to revert to winkers.
