This year's Moe Cup has been abandoned and other meetings transferred with the controversial track to undergo remedial work.

Open for less than two years, the StrathAyr surface uses the same Village Green turf in place on Randwick's much-maligned Kensington track which has not been raced on since November.

The Moe Racing Club has decided to bite the bullet and renovate the surface with a view to re-opening next year.

"The Moe Racing Club considers the welfare of jockeys and horses to be paramount and has taken this decision to ensure the safety of the track as well as having a long-term sustainable surface for racing at Moe," MRC chief executive David McKinnon said.

"Bringing forward our annual renovation and then allowing the track time to consolidate over the warmer spring and summer months is in the best interests of the track given it is not currently performing to the standard we desire."

The Australian Turf Club has decided to give the Kensington track some more time to consolidate in the warmer weather in the hope it can avoid a total renovation.
