Moreira stars in Japan jockeys series

Monday 31 August 2015, 4:41pm

Superstar jockey Joao Moreira has showcased his talents in Japan with seven winners from 20 rides in two days.

The Hong Kong-based Moreira also amassed the most points in four designated races to win the international jockeys' series in Hokkaido in which Australian Craig Williams also competed.

"I knew all the jockeys came here to win the championship, and I was hoping (to win) but obviously I didn't just win it on my own," Moreira said.

"I had people around me that gave me a chance to ride really good horses and I would like to thank the JRA for calling me over for the competition.

"I came here to learn from these jockeys who I've seen doing extremely well at home and riding here."

Moreira will begin his defence of the Hong Kong premiership when the new season begins on Sunday.

Young Australian jockey Chad Schofield is also expected to have his first rides on the opening day.
