Vezalay gains start in Cockram Stakes

Friday 28 August 2015, 6:23pm

Favourite Vezalay has gained a start as the first emergency in the Group Three Cockram Stakes with the race eve scratching of Nadeem Lass.

A convincing first-up winner in a mares' 1100m handicap at Caulfield two weeks ago, Vezalay chases her first stakes win on Saturday having been Group-placed in the Kewney Stakes last campaign.

"She's very well. We're really happy with her," co-trainer Troy Corstens said.

"We're glad she has got a start."

Vezalay was the $3.70 favourite on Friday with dual Group One winner Cosmic Endeavour at $5.

Vezalay is one of two stakes runners for the father and son partnership of Leon and Troy Corstens on Saturday with Mr Individual resuming in the McNeil Stakes (1200m).

Mr Individual is being aimed at the Caulfield Guineas in which he will try to emulate his sire Starspangledbanner who won in 2009 when trained by Leon Corstens.

A $17 chance in early Guineas markets, Mr Individual was a strong winner on debut at Bendigo in June.

"It's obviously going to be a very big step from a Bendigo maiden to the McNeil, but he's the kind of horse that's got a lot of class and I think he can make that step," Troy Corstens said.

"He's ready to go but he's going to be a lot better when he gets over further. I think a mile is going to be his pet trip."

Corstens said Mr Individual and his sire were different types of horses with Starspangledbanner always a keen sprinting type whereas Mr Individual was workmanlike.

Starspangledbanner won the McNeil on his way to Guineas triumph.
