It is almost two years since French import Trevieres made his only Australian race appearance when second in the Group One Toorak Handicap.

On Saturday, Trevieres is set to make a return to racing after a lengthy absence because of a fetlock joint injury.

Now in the care of trainer Peter Morgan and Craig Widdison, Trevieres needs a scratching to earn a place in the Memsie Stakes as the second emergency, otherwise he will line up in a 1400m handicap on the undercard.

"I think everything is good with him. It's going to be a bit of trial and error with him because he hasn't had a run for two years. But he's certainly in pretty good order," Morgan said.

"We had him in last autumn but I wasn't happy with him so we put him back out again."

Morgan said the gelding had a screw in a fetlock joint which has since been removed, and the trainer has been pleased with the talented galloper who has had two recent barrier trials.

"He's had two trials which we haven't really pushed him. We've nursed him a little bit, I just hope we haven't nursed him too much," Morgan said.

"It's one of those things. You nurse a horse that's got a few problems and hope that on the day he's fired up and runs out of his skin."

While Morgan has Trevieres on the comeback trail, the trainer admits his spring stocks have been depleted with the promising Green Card, stakeswinner Eloping, and lightly raced Mordicus departing his stable recently.

Green Card, a horse Morgan considered a Caulfield Guineas hope, and Mordicus, who he rated a Group horse, have gone to Hong Kong while Eloping has been transferred to John Sargent in Sydney with Segenhoe buying into the mare.

"I've lost three good spring candidates which makes it tough on a small stable," Morgan said.
