Simenon to return to jumps racing

Wednesday 26 August 2015, 6:48am

Trainer Willie Mullins has a Melbourne Cup contender in Max Dynamite but Flat racing may be over for stablemate Simenon.

Max Dynamite confirmed his credentials for a trip to Australia with victory in last week's Lonsdale Cup in which Simenon, who finished fourth in the 2013 Melbourne Cup, was last.

Simenon's owner Nick Peacock said Simenon's future now lay over the jumps.

"I would say age is maybe catching up with him. He certainly doesn't seem to have enjoyed himself on his last two runs," Peacock said.

"We could run him in long-distance hurdles for a year or two, as long as the ground is good. Otherwise he'll be given an honourable retirement.

"I wouldn't think he'll run on the Flat again. The last thing I want to do is see him running in handicaps on the Flat as there's nothing worse than seeing a good horse slogged when he's on the way down."

Another Peacock-owned Mullins-trained stayer, Wicklow Brave, ran second in the Ebor with the Irish St Leger his likely target.

Mullins is keen to give Max Dynamite a lead-up run to the Melbourne Cup with the Herbert Power and the Caulfield Cup the options.
