Options open for G1 placed Sagaronne

Sunday 16 August 2015, 6:08pm

Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds is keeping his options open for Sagaronne and may head straight to Sydney or Melbourne with the classy three-year-old filly.

Sagaronne showed she was up to top company when second to Press Statement in the Group One J J Atkins (1600m) at her most recent start on June 5.

She ran in a barrier trial at the Gold Coast last Tuesday and finished second to another Group One contender, Rudy, in a 1000m hit-out.

"It was a nice trial as she tacked on before the corner and made ground down the middle of the track," Edmonds said.

He said Sagaronne had done well since the trial and he had three choices where to start the filly's campaign.

"I am really going to give it another week or so before I make a final decision. I want to see how the weather goes and how the tracks come up," Edmonds said.

"There is a race for her at Doomben in two weeks. But a week later there is the Furious Stakes in Sydney and in Melbourne there is also a suitable three-year-old race."

"The VRC Oaks is our main target but she is also entered for the Thousand Guineas and the Caulfield Classic as well."

The Helen Page-trained Rudy is set to make his return in an open handicap over 1350m on Saturday.

It is expected Rudy will get about 60.5kg in the race where he will face brilliant last-start winner Steel Zip.

Rudy will then run in the Tramway Stakes and Theo Mark Stakes in Sydney before tackling the Group One Epsom Hcp (1600m) at Randwick on October 3.

The gelding is already proven at the Randwick 1600m having won the Group Two Villiers and run fourth in the Group One Doncaster Mile.
