Eurell aiming for black type with Redasun

Wednesday 12 August 2015, 5:45pm

Greg Eurell is in a quandary as to where to head with first-up Sandown winner Redasun.

The Cranbourne-based trainer is keen to add black type to the mares name but is unsure of her best distance after her impressive victory in the Schweppes Handicap (1300m) on Wednesday.

Ridden by Damien Oliver, Redasun ($6.50) scored a three-quarter length win from Syzygy Blossom ($15) with Mossbeat ($4 fav) the same margin away third.

Redasun won successive races over 1600m on the lakeside circuit at Sandown during the autumn before heading to Adelaide, finishing fifth over 1800m in Group Three grade before tailing home in last position in the Group One Schweppes Oaks over 2000m.

Eurell said a hard campaign and two trips to Adelaide had most likely taken a toll on the daughter of Haradasun and he was thrilled to see the mare return a first-up winner on Wednesday.

"What we're hoping to do is push her rating up and hopefully sneak into the right sort of black type race and just see where we end up," Eurell said.

"We know she's very strong at 1600 metres and that will be her target distance to start with.

"I really don't know if she can't run 2000 metres, but with a different sort of a prep and being a bit stronger now it may lend herself heading in that direction."

Eurell said early black type races that could be targeted by Redasun include the Group Two Let's Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on September 12 and the Group Two Stocks Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on October 2.
