Sargent-trained mares ready for spring

Monday 10 August 2015, 5:36pm

John Sargent is an enviable position with three Group One performers heading to the major spring races and the trainer's biggest problem is keeping them apart as long as possible.

Thunder Lady and Kirramosa are ready to begin their campaigns at Rosehill on Saturday while Gust of Wind will be seen the following week.

Kirramosa, winner of the 2013 VRC Oaks and last year's runner-up Thunder Lady, will step out in benchmark races over 1200 and 1400 metres respectively while Australian Oaks winner Gust Of Wind begins her campaign in the Group Two Warwick Stakes seven days later.

A cracked pedal bone put paid to Kirramosa's autumn campaign before it began but Sargent is confident she is over the problem.

"She will get 60 kilos on Saturday so I will claim three kilos with Kayla Nisbet to ride," Sargent said.

"It won't be a big field and I think it's a nice race for her."

The recent death of Hong Kong businessman Oliver Wong means Thunder Lady has changed hands and will race this spring for Sir Owen Glenn who is keen to build his broodmare band for the future stud career of his triple Group One winner Criterion.

Thunder Lady finished fifth in the Australian Oaks with the winner retained by Wong's wife Corinna.

"The plan with Thunder Lady is to head to the Metropolitan and the Bart Cummings and see where we go from there," Sargent said.

"She didn't handle the wet track in the Oaks so it's good to see a firm track.

"Gust Of Wind will wait a week. She will stay all day and the Melbourne Cup is her aim.

"All three are in the big ones so it's a question of how they get there."

Chris Waller-trained stablemates, Sydney Cup winner Grand Marshal and Victoria Derby winner Preferment head the 11 entries for Thunder Lady's race.
