Champion jumps jockey Steve Pateman will appeal a suspension that could cost him the ride on Bashboy in the Grand National Steeplechase.

Pateman was suspended for six jumps races by stewards at Warrnambool on Saturday.

The seven-time Tommy Corrigan Medal winner for riding excellence will appeal the charge and severity of the sentence before the RAD Board.

Warrnambool stewards deemed the interference caused by Pateman to be at the high end of the scale.

Besides a booking for Bashboy in Sunday's Grand National at Ballarat, Pateman said he also had rides in the other three jumps races on the program.

The suspension would also rule him out of the Grand National meeting in Adelaide the following week.

Pateman was planning on heading to New Zealand to ride in the Grand National Hurdle at Riccarton on Wednesday and the Grand National Steeplechase on Saturday.

"Unless I get a stay (of proceedings) I won't be going to New Zealand," he said.

The champion jockey has ridden Bashboy to 12 victories over jumps, including his Grand National Steeplechase wins at Sandown in 2012 and 2013.

Pateman and fellow rider Gerrad Gilmour were each fined $200 for misconduct after exchanging heated words following the race in which Pateman was suspended.
