Regular to resume at Doomben

Friday 31 July 2015, 3:36pm

Trainer Bryan Guy is expecting an early morning call from outback Australia before Regular runs at Doomben.

Regular, who runs in Saturday's Racezone Hcp (1350m), is a favourite of Guy's former apprentice Janette Johnson, the winner of four races on the gelding.

Johnson rode more than 100 winners until she lost the battle of maintaining her riding weight.

She had her last ride in March and since then has adopted a have-car-will-travel attitude to a sightseeing tour of the Australian outback.

"The last time I heard from her she had only just come back into phone range. I am not certain where she has got to now but I wouldn't be surprised if she rings on Saturday morning with some advice," Guy said.

The Gold Coast trainer has always had a big opinion of Regular who raced in the Group One J J Atkins Stakes as a two-year-old.

"Regular hasn't lived up to Group company class but he has raced well in some good quality races," Guy said.

"He has had two trials coming into this race and won the last one in nice fashion. He likes Doomben and has drawn the rails.

"Also while he hasn't won first-up he has been second three times when fresh," Guy said.

Regular's main rival on Saturday appears to be the promising Feltre who is going for four straight wins.

Feltre was scratched from last week's Sunshine Coast Anniversary Cup because of the wet track.
