Tony Gollan begins quest for next title

Friday 31 July 2015, 1:53pm

Record breaking trainer Tony Gollan will start his quest for a third straight Brisbane premiership with quality rather than quantity at Doomben.

Gollan returned from an overseas holiday on Wednesday to find he had beaten the late Bruce McLachlan's record for the most wins in a Brisbane metropolitan season.

He recorded 79 winners which bettered the 78 set by McLachlan in 1987-88.

"It was an honour just to get near Bruce's record. He was an icon in Queensland with a record number of premierships and Group one winners," Gollan said.

"So to break it was a real thrill. Then again I have the biggest team in Brisbane and I should be winning the premiership."

"Of course that is my aim again this season. We had 60 boxes for most of the season and I think to get more than one metropolitan win per box was a great credit to my staff."

"I wasn't obsessing about it. I said to my staff to just go about our business and if the record came so be it. If it didn't we would have tried to get it the next season."

Gollan will have just two runners at Doomben on Saturday - Satirical Lass in the Qantac Hcp (1350m) and Fixation in the Queensland Breeders Hcp (1600m).

"It was just the way the race meetings fell. We will have a big number of horses running next week," he said.

"But you can say we have quality rather than quantity at Saturday's meeting."

Gollan said Satirical Lass had been running very well and recorded very smart time in her last start win at Doomben over 1200m.

"I have no worries about her stepping up to 1350 metres. I even tried her as a 1600 to 2000 metre horse earlier in her career but I think these distances suit better," he said.

Gollan said Fixation had been looking for 1600m and a dry track.
