Weir falls agonisingly short of 300 mark

Friday 31 July 2015, 8:26am

Darren Weir has fallen agonisingly short of 300 winners for season 2014-15.

Australia's leading trainer for the season, Weir has finished on 298 after a winless final meeting of the season at Pakenham.

Weir saddled seven runners at the meeting with Shakespeare and Say Something both filling runner-up positions.

Last weekend Weir secured his second Melbourne trainers' premiership after winning doubles at Caulfield and Geelong.

His 298 winners this season was a personal best for Weir who operates stables at Ballarat and Warrnambool, eclipsing the 253 winners he prepared to win the Australian trainers' title for the first time last season.
