Ryan renews quest for riding milestone

Friday 31 July 2015, 8:06am

In a week when jockeys' premierships across the country have been decided, Greg Ryan will bid for a milestone of his own at Tamworth.

The bush jockey is on 3319 career winners, three short of the late Jack Thompson's mark.

Robert Thompson, no relation to Jack Thompson, is the only other Australian jockey to ride more than 3319, passing the tally in July 2008 and now well beyond 4000.

Ryan has a full book of eight rides at Tamworth on Friday for six different trainers.

His hopes of reaching the mark earlier this week were dashed by the wet weather which forced the cancellation of race meetings at Quirindi on Sunday and Warren on Monday.

The Tamworth program will be the final meeting run in NSW this season.

The new racing term opens at Rosehill on Saturday with an eight-race card headed by the Listed Winter Challenge.

Chris Waller won the corresponding race last year with He's Your Man and has the top three horses in early markets - favourite You'll Never, last-start winner Rugged Cross and Eigelstein.
