Weather key to record holder's return

Thursday 30 July 2015, 1:19pm

Trainer Phil Sweeney is hoping the predicted showers don't eventuate for his talented galloper Sweet Emily ahead of her return to racing at Moonee Valley.

The 1000m Moonee Valley record holder is down to run in the Melbourne Signage Concepts Hcp (1000m) on Saturday.

"She's going good but it will all depend on the weather conditions," Sweeney said.

"She doesn't really handle the (wet) going but I really want to go there if the track is suitable as she needs to kick off."

Sweet Emily had a successful campaign when last in work, beginning with a Swan Hill victory before she progressed to Moonee Valley where she won three of her next five runs, including a 1000m race on December 27 in track record time.

She posted two victories in the 955m challenge and was pipped by Beach Front to record the fastest time in the series.

"She had a really good campaign," Sweeney said.

"She had a good spell and has had a few nice gallops and she's ready to go.

"I would have liked to have got a barrier trial into her and while it hasn't been over-wet, it's just been inconvenient."

Sweet Emily is on the third line of betting for Saturday's race at $4, behind $2.65 favourite Il Cavallo.

The pair met last year at Sandown on a wet track when the Peter Moody-trained galloper had the measure of Sweet Emily.

Moonee Valley is currently rated a soft five with showers forecast leading up to Saturday's meeting.

Sweeney said he would also enter Sweet Emily for the return meeting at Sandown on Wednesday as a back-up option if the Moonee Valley surface deteriorated.
