Smith Suiting up for open grade

Wednesday 29 July 2015, 11:10am

Young trainer Bradley Smith hopes his caution with former Godolphin galloper Suit will bring him an open company win at Doomben.

Suit was among the pre post favourites for a restricted class race at the Sunshine Coast last week but was scratched on the morning of the race and saved for Saturday.

Smith said Suit had a very slight heel bruise and he wasn't going to risk him.

"If the race was on Sunday he would have been fine. But I wasn't willing to take any chance with him and any chance he might have aggravated the injury," Smith said.

"We have a lot of time to go with him so we erred on the side of caution."

Suit has since pleased Smith and he has booked premiership-winning jockey Jim Byrne for the gelding's start in the Cargo Transport Systems Handicap (1200m).

"He worked well on Tuesday morning and provided everything stays the same he will be hard to beat on Saturday," Smith said.

Smith has had a lot of success in the past year with horses such as Rock Musician, Diamond Trail and La Dolce Vita.

The 35-year-old also has seven yearlings which will boost his team numbers to around the 20 horse mark in the new season.

But Smith feels Suit can be the horse to put him in the limelight.

"You never get ahead of yourself in this game but you need Saturday horses and he might be the one to lead the way for us," he said.

He bought Suit following a Godolphin dispersal sale at the Inglis complex in Melbourne in March.

"I really liked the look of him and he had form behind some pretty handy horses," Smith said.

He and his clients would have gone to $40,000 for Suit but were able to get him for $11,500.

"In some ways I can see why they let him go. He is a lot of hard work and we have to watch his feet all the time. But as long as we keep them right he should win his share of races up here," Smith said.

Suit trialled twice for Smith before racing and on both occasions and was especially impressive when he made up eight lengths on Ramornie winner Rock Royalty.

The gelding was then second at his only race start for Smith behind the smart Headwater Country at Doomben three weeks ago.

Suit has won twice and been placed five times from his nine race starts.
