Williams, Oliver continue premiership race

Thursday 23 July 2015, 3:32pm

Champion jockeys Craig Williams and Damien Oliver have already fought out one gripping Melbourne premiership.

And Williams believes the experience six years ago when he shared the honours with Oliver has stood him in good stead in this season's title race.

The two finished the 2008/09 season with 71 wins apiece.

It was Williams' fourth-straight premiership and he is hoping to claim a fifth title this weekend.

But Oliver, a nine-time premiership winner, holds a one-win lead over Williams going into Saturday's Caulfield meeting which is the second last metropolitan fixture of the season.

The title is expected to come down to the final meeting on Sunday at Ballarat, like it did six years ago at Sandown.

"I would have said that experience has really made this one a lot easier than before because I thought the last one was really tough, mentally and physically," Williams said.

"Either from experience or just that I've got used to tough competition, I would say that's really placed me in good stead for this competition now because it's not affecting me anywhere near like it did the time before."

The premiership has been enthralling in the past month between Williams, Oliver and Dwayne Dunn who have all been in the lead at various time.

Dunn held a two-win buffer after last Saturday at Flemington, where between the three riders they won six races.

But Dunn's chances have ended because of a careless riding suspension ruling him out of the final three meetings.

He was overhauled by Oliver who rode three winners on Wednesday at Bendigo while Williams claimed a double.

In recent years Williams has taken up riding stints in Japan during off-peak times in the Australian season but this year he has remained largely at home.

Trainers have been keen to book the premiership contenders with both having strong chances again this weekend.

"Our managers have been working really hard and there's no doubt the trainers have got behind the championship as well," Williams said.

"I would say without the support of the owners and trainers, especially at this time of year, it wouldn't be what it is.

"They've made it be a really thrilling competition with the opportunities that the three of us have had for the last month, there's no doubt about that."
