Firmer Grafton track to suit Turbulent Jet

Monday 6 July 2015, 5:06pm

Trainer Lee Curtis has had to go further than planned to find a suitable track for Turbulent Jet who runs in the Ramornie Handicap at Grafton.

Heavy Sydney tracks in June have meant Turbulent Jet has stayed in his Rosehill stable over the past few weeks.

But Curtis has kept him up to the mark with some strong gallops and says he is ready to perform in the 1200m-Listed sprint on Wednesday.

"He is just looking for a reasonable track surface and he should get it in Grafton," Curtis said.

"He has missed the last two Saturdays but he has had some good gallops so that doesn't worry me.

"I just didn't want to run him on a shifting track and I'm glad I didn't."

Turbulent Jet ran two encouraging seconds in May on soft tracks with leading Sydney apprentice Winona Costin aboard but she will be riding Timeless Prince in the Ramornie.

Andrew Gibbons takes the ride on Turbulent Jet who has drawn barrier nine in the field of 16 plus two emergencies.

He is an $11 chance with I've Got The Looks the TAB's $4.20 favourite.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained mare will be ridden by Robert Thompson and goes to the race fresh from a six-week break after a three-start Queensland campaign.

She won two Listed races - the Silk Stocking and the Juanmo Stakes - before running eighth, beaten three lengths, in the Group Three Glenlogan Park Stakes on May 23.

Godolphin's Barbed and the Kris Lees-trained Thump are the $8 second favourites.

There are 16 acceptors in Thursday's Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) headed by the Ciaron Maher-trained Kapour, a last-start winner of the Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill.

He is the $4.20 favourite in early markets ahead of the Gai Waterhouse-trained Bonfire ($4.60) who ran 4-1/2 lengths second to Kapour in the Winter Cup on a heavy track.
