Flemington double for Williams and Sadler

Saturday 27 June 2015, 3:16pm

An inspired ride on Lonrockstar helped Craig Williams and John Sadler combine for a winning double at Flemington.

Williams and Sadler teamed up to win with Bengal Cat before taking out the Takeover Target Tribute Handicap (1100m) on Saturday.

The Victoria Racing Club named the race in honour of the former champion sprinter who died last weekend following a paddock accident.

Easy in the market, Lonrockstar ($12) scored a short-head victory over Nadeem Lass ($10) with the favourite Hard Romp ($3.20) three-quarters of a length away third.

Lonrockstar drew barrier 13 for the straight 1100m course but Williams elected to track towards the inside.

He followed Desert Jeuney, which drew barrier four, and when he asked the gelding for his effort Lonrockstar took gaps to score a solid win.

"He's a horse that goes really well down the straight," Williams said.

"It was the right race for him. He had the right run and he seemed to lift."

Sadler said Lonrockstar was a horse that liked to get back in his races.

"The horse has been in good form and just needed a race to go his way and it worked out well today," Sadler said.

Sadler praised Williams's professionalism in walking the track before the race and finding the best going.

"He does his form as well as anybody and he gets it wrong the odd time, but overall he's super professional," Sadler said.

Lonrockstar is likely to return to Flemington on July 11 to run in the All Victorian Sprint Final over 1200m.
