Lucky Tom to make amends at Doomben

Thursday 25 June 2015, 12:54pm

Trainer Harold Norman has kept faith in his apprentice Rikki Jamieson by retaining her to ride Lucky Tom at Doomben.

Jamieson had her critics and was questioned at length by stewards over her handling of the three-year-old in the Queensland Guineas (1600m) on June 6.

Norman says he has every confidence in Jamieson to get the job done in Saturday's $100,000 BRC Three-Year-Old Plate (1350m).

"What was she (Jamieson) supposed to do. We told her to go forward as she would have been stuck wide and back in the field if she elected to go back," Norman said.

"I know they went quick in the lead but that is the way things worked out."

Lucky Tom raced outside the leader in the Guineas but could not sustain the pace and weakened to finish 14th of the 16 runners.

Jamieson agreed with stewards that in hindsight she may have made a mistake by increasing the tempo from the 600m-mark.

Norman has always rated Lucky Tom as potentially the best horse he has trained.

"But I am not sure at this stage of his career that he is a strong miler (1600m)," he said.

"I am not saying he won't run a strong 1600 metres later but at this stage he just doesn't seem to run it out."

Norman believes the drop back to 1350m on Saturday will suit Lucky Tom.

"His first two runs this campaign behind Najoom and Kuro, who are really smart sprinters, were very good as he was never on the track," Norman said."
