Midweek hurdle school for Gotta Take Care

Sunday 21 June 2015, 4:34pm

A hurdle school at Warrnambool will determine whether Gotta Take Care shoots for a fourth straight Brendan Dreschler Hurdle at Bendigo.

Trainer Darren Weir said Gotta Take Care needed some solid work to get him to his top for Sunday's feature race.

Gotta Take Care was scheduled to contest the Galleywood Hurdle at Warrnambool during last month's carnival but was ruled out with feet issues.

He had his first run in seven weeks when last in a 2500m handicap at Flemington on June 13.

Weir did not make any excuses for Gotta Takes Care's poor performance and said he was hoping the switch back to jumping would sharpen him up.

Following his Flemington effort Gotta Take Care was taken to Cranbourne where he won a hurdle school on June 17 under regular rider John Allen.

"He ran terrible at Flemington but Johnny was happy with how he trialled the other day," Weir said.

"He'll trial again on Wednesday at Warrnambool and providing he goes well there we'll push on to the Brendan Dreschler.

This year's Brendan Dreschler will be run over 3600m whereas his previous three victories in the race have been over 3200m.

However Gotta Take Care did win the Harry D Young Hurdle at Oakbank over the journey in 2013.

Weir's promising jumper Now And Zen will head to Adelaide on Saturday for a hurdle race at Morphettville looking to keep his unbeaten record intact.

Now And Zen won his jumps debut at Warrnambool in May before heading to Casterton with his latest victory coming at Bendigo.

Weir said Now And Zen was being aimed at next month's Grand National Hurdle at Warrnambool.
