Guy snaps up Zac Purton for Falloch ride

Friday 19 June 2015, 12:04pm

Gold Coast trainer Bryan Guy has called on an old friend in an attempt to get promising two-year-old Falloch into the winners' list on his home track.

Falloch, who has started twice and run second both times, will tackle a talented field in Saturday's Tattersall's Stakes (1400m) at the Gold Coast.

Zac Purton spent much of his apprenticeship based on the Gold Coast but did little riding for Guy because the trainer had another star apprentice, Michael Rodd, in his stable.

Rodd and Purton had some mighty on-track battles and each won the Brisbane senior riders' premiership as apprentices in the early 2000s.

Guy had hoped to book Rodd for Falloch but the now Singapore-based rider will not be making the trip to the Gold Coast.

Instead, Guy has turned to Hong Kong-based star Purton, who is riding Peggy Jean in the Group One Tatt's Tiara.

"They don't come much better than Zac and Michael so either one would obviously do. Falloch has been beaten at his only two runs but they were both behind very good horses," Guy said.

"At his first start he ran second to Sagaronne who went on to run second in a Group One race (J J Atkins). Then he was second to Divine Centuri who I think will be very smart."

Falloch, who is by former top sprinter Falvelon out of a New Zealand-winning mare Retirement day, cost $40,000 at the Magic Millions yearling sales.

Guy hopes he can measure up to Magic Millions races in the summer.

Purton will have seven rides at the Gold Coast.
