Avalanches upsets Ipswich Mile favourite

Saturday 13 June 2015, 12:42pm

Trainer Trevor Bailey believes the best of Ipswich winner Avalanches won't be seen until the Eagle Farm racetrack is reopened.

Avalanches ($10) continued to prove a good buy for Bailey when he beat the favourite Budget Bender ($2.50) by a short half-head in the Ipswich Mile on Saturday.

However, Bailey said he was sure the gelding was at his best at Eagle Farm which has been shut for nearly a year for renovations.

"The sooner they reopen it for Avalanches the better," he said.

"He doesn't really handle Doomben and his only start at Eagle Farm he was second to top galloper Hopfgarten in a stakes race.

"We would like to give him a try over a middle distance but we will probably have to wait until Eagle Farm reopens.

"One option is to take him to Rockhampton for their Cup next week but we will make up our mind after we see how he comes up."

Avalanches was originally raced by the Darley Stud but was sold to clients of Bailey for $25,000.

"He has won more than $145,000 for us in just on a year so he doesn't owe us anything," Bailey said.

Jockey Jim Byrne said Avalanches probably should have won by a bigger margin.

"I couldn't get off the fence when I wanted to but he did finish very well," Byrne said.
