Ulmann to take on older horses at Ipswich

Wednesday 10 June 2015, 12:56pm

The lure of black-type has convinced trainer Peter Moody to up the ante with three-year-old Ulmann at Ipswich.

The colt will take his place against older horses in Saturday's Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) instead of racing against his own age group.

Moody said the prospect of carrying 59kg in the three-year-old race on the program had not been the reason for selecting the Eye Liner.

"It is about the chance to get some black type beside his name," Moody said.

He carries 54kg in the Eye Liner and jumps from barrier six in the 11-horse field which is headed by Group One winner Smokin' Joey on 59.5kg.

Ulmann failed to get a start as first emergency for the Group Two Queensland Guineas (1600m) at Doomben last Saturday, a race his trainer thought he could have won.

"But that is racing. You can't change things in the past," he said.

"He ran a terrific second to the eventual Oaks winner Winx in the Sunshine Coast Guineas and he was a good winner at Sandown three runs back."

"Ulmann is a very well-bred entire being by Sebring out of a Danehill mare so the whole idea of going to Queensland was to chase black type."

"The Eye Liner looks an ideal race but he is coming back to 1350 metres off a 1600 metre preparation," Moody said.

Michael Cahill will ride Ulmann taking over from Moody's stable rider Luke Nolen.

"Mick know Ipswich well so that is a bonus," Moody said.
