Discreet salvaged her faltering Magic Millions campaign when she landed a plunge in the Carlton Mid Handicap (1110m).

Trainer Kelly Schweida produced a masterstroke by adding a tongue tie to Discreet who was heavily backed from $2.80 to $2 favouritism.

"She didn't pull up the best last start and I thought she was entitled to find the line better than she did," Schweida said.

"The next day she was fine so I experimented with a tongue tie and today she found the line like we know she can."

Munce said Discreet was slow into stride but recovered well to settle midfield in a fast-run race.

"It was was probably a blessing that she was a bit slow out because there was good speed and she travelled well in behind them," he said.

"In the straight when push came to shove she was always going to be strong at the finish because she was able to conserve energy early in the race."

Schweida hasn't decided whether Discreet has her next start in the Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 12 or the Fillies and Mares Handicap (1300m) the same day.

Meanwhile, the Magic Millions Stayers Cup (1800m) remains the goal for Noisy Ocean despite his defeat in the Bundaberg Distilling Co. Handicap (1600m).

Trainer Bryan Guy said Noisy Ocean wasn't suited by the slow pace set by Jason Letherby aboard the leader Equissential who outsprinted his rivals to win by two-and-a-half lengths.

"It turned into a sit-and-sprint race which didn't suit our horse but I still thought he did a good job to get up and run second after it looked like he wouldn't run a place on the home turn," Guy said.

"Although it was disappointing he couldn't win today at least he showed that he's looking for the 1800 metres now."
