Myboycharlie cleaned up in feature races worth $300,000 on the first day of the winter carnival at Doomben on May 9. Promising Myboycharlie filly (and last month’s ‘One to Watch’) Blueberry Hill continued her recent success in the Gr.2 Champagne Classic (1200m) and his classy sprinter Charlie Boy chimed in to win the Gr.3 BRC Sprint (1350m). Both winners are out of mares by Falbrav and they both have Gr.1 targets in June. Trainer Liam Birchley is confident Blueberry Hill has more stakes wins in store. "She has been an emerging horse for us and has kept improving all the time. There isn't much of her but she deserves a crack at the big races." A homebred for Peter Marshall and his daughter-in-law Karen, she won at Doomben and the Sunshine Coast before losing her unbeaten record when an unlucky second in the Gr.3 Ken Russell Classic at the Gold Coast on Anzac Day. Birchley set Blueberry Hill for the Gr.2 BRC Sires' Produce Stakes on May 30 where she ran 2nd by a mere half neck. Now she’ll aim for the Gr.1 J J Atkins Stakes on Jun 6. Charlie Boy returned to winning form at Doomben and his Gr.1 assignment on Jun 6 is the $2 million Stradbroke Hcp (1350m). “The Stradbroke is his winter goal and his next run will be in the Doomben 10,000 or the QTC Cup,” trainer Peter Snowden told AAP on May 9. “There’s plenty of improvement to come.”
Charlie Boy hadn't won a race since the Gr.2 Danehill Stakes at Flemington in September 2013. "Gelding the horse before this campaign has been the making of him… he's definitely on an upward spiral.” The Doomben double capped a big week for Myboycharlie, who’d already had two debut winners. In Hong Kong his John Size trained gelding, Happy Surveys, won on debut at Happy Valley. Ridden by Joao Moreira, Happey Surveys won the Lyrebird Hcp (1200m). "Joao rode him quietly and he was able to swoosh home and win,” Size said. Another Myboycharlie sired 2yo debut winner earlier in the week was French-bred colt Dragon Rouge, who was successful in the Prix du Coq Hardi (1000m) at Bordeaux. He is trained by Didier Guillemin who also prepared Myboycharlie filly Jardin Fleuri to win a juvenile sprint by 6 lengths in Bordeaux in April.
