Newbury in equation for Long Run

Friday 28 December 2012, 12:26pm

Nicky Henderson is thinking of running Long Run in the Denman Chase at Newbury in preparation for another crack at the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Having reclaimed his King George VI Chase crown on Boxing Day he will now attempt to regain the Gold Cup he lost to the ill-fated Synchronised in March.

Henderson is, however, wary that such a gruelling race may have taken more out of him than usual.

The Seven Barrows trainer is also responsible for current ante-post Gold Cup favourite and Hennessy Gold Cup winner Bobs Worth.

"He's fine, he ate up last night and is a happy bunny. We haven't really digested anything yet," Henderson said of Long Run.

"We were thinking Bobs Worth will go to Cheltenham (for the Argento), because he loves Cheltenham, and Long Run will go to Newbury like last year.

"It also gives him a bit more time after the King George, and he'll tell us if he's ready. We'll just be mindful about how much it took out of him because that was tough."

On a day of successes for Seven Barrows, Riverside Theatre was one notable disappointment and Henderson feels the ground was to blame.

"I was baffled. With all the others running well, I was very disappointed with him, as he steamed up Kempton with Darlan in a racecourse gallop the other week," he said.

"You'd have to say it could be the ground. Barry (Geraghty) said he was happy for a circuit and then he stopped."
