Another Great Racing Story Well Worth A Read

PHIL Sly has every reason to prioritise his life. The owner-breeder has had 46 operations in a battle with cancer that has stretched from a “six months to live” prognosis to a pending five-year milestone.

Sly was in Brisbane last week for cell treatment, and on Tuesday was due for surgery “to remove a couple of more ribs”. But he postponed the operation until Monday to attend a fundraising lunch at Flemington on Saturday.

The lunch is in support of the Pancare Foundation — of which he is a director and sponsor — a charity devoted to the research and treatment of bowel, liver, biliary, pancreatic and foregut cancers. Sly has them all.

An added bonus will be watching his filly Lumosty run in the Listed Straight Six down the straight at Flemington on the way to a crack at Group 1 glory during the Brisbane carnival.

Sly, who owns 80 horses, calls cancer “the grub”. “I’ve got the grub back,” said the 55-year-old, who credits Group 1 winner Mosheen for prolonging his life.

“Mosheen came along when I was first diagnosed with the grub. She opened up Japan to me; she opened up the meeting with Dr (Mehrdad) Nikfarjam and Pancare. What that horse has done for me, no human being could have done,” he said.

“Pancare was only a small organisation when I got the grub and Dr Nikfarjam operated on me when nobody else would.

“He loved to follow the horses and he knew Mosheen and we clicked. I would have been dead had I not discovered Dr Nikfarjam.

“I was given six months to live but, thanks to him, we’re heading into our fifth year.

“I just hope Lumosty is as good as Mosheen. If Mosheen opened doors, maybe Lumosty can do the same. People rely on me now in many different ways and I know how much I love racing and how important it is to me to help others through Pancare.

“Before I leave this earth I want Pancare to have powerful corporate governance and be available to everyone. So that if you get crook, you can go to your computer and see a Queensland professor has operated successfully on 150 patients, which is far better than being totally confused and seeking out one of two doctors who may or may not be able to help.”

Sly said horses had given him the will to fight.

“I’m pushing on. I have steel ribs and my liver looks like something from ET,’’ he said.

“I don’t know what the future holds, but winning helps and so does fully establishing Pancare so others won’t need to go through what’s happened to me.

“I love my horses.

“Your belly can be dragging on the ground, but you win a race and you are feeling 10 foot tall. It is an amazing adrenaline rush.

“There is no point feeling sorry for yourself. I think of the poor kid who Pancare helped last week and the hundreds of others. Pancare is going forward and it will change the way the filthy cancers are handled in future.”

Sly said he would enjoy a double bonus on Saturday if Lumosty wins.

“I’d be over the moon if she won and on top of that we have 350 attending the luncheon — and we had 700 on the waiting list. The VRC and a host of sponsors will make sure we make a lot of money to plough back into Pancare.

“So it is easy to understand why I would postpone an operation — I can get one of them any day, as I know only too well!”

New Horse For Perth-'Classy Cat'

$1,100 per 5% share...

If you're interested in buying into a young mare who's already a proven winner and will be racing for you in a matter of weeks, then you might be interested in our latest stable acquisition (pictured here winning at Pinjarra), 'Classy Cat'...

Classy Cat is a 4 year old mare who's had 7 starts for 1 win, 3 thirds and a fourth. She's very consistent and always gives her supporters a run for their money

Looking through her record-which also includes 2 wins and 2 placings at the trials, she’s obviously a real trier and always puts in. After watching all her videos, I’m very confident that she’ll be winning more races-this time in our blue & white Belhus colours!  I'm giving her to Ivan Haggerty to train. Ivan does a great job with his small team of horses and in addition to Minyulo Miss who's won her last three starts in a row, he also trained Minimalist to win for us last week too..

So, she’s a young mare with proven ability that always puts in. She’s been spelled since her last campaign and has just started back in work as of last week which should see her ready to race again in early July. There's no risk that she can't run fast enough, you won't have to wait a year or more for her to run-she's ready to go and just waiting for her new owners!

I’m offering her into 5% shares at $1,100 each and fixed syndicate fees of $182.50 per calendar month which is exactly $6/day.

Off the back of our first email two days ago, she's already over half subscribed and you're participation is invited!
