Weir in box seat for Melbourne premiership

Tuesday 19 May 2015, 5:20pm

David Hayes and Tom Dabernig are still in contention for the Melbourne trainers' premiership but Dabernig admits Darren Weir is going to be hard to peg back.

Reigning premiership winner Weir holds a five-win lead over the training partnership of Hayes and his nephew Dabernig with just over two months of the season remaining, while Peter Moody is two wins further back.

"We're five behind and it's probably looking a bit more out of reach," Dabernig said.

"We've got reasonable runners for the next couple of weeks but June and July we're always naturally a little quieter, our stable.

Metropolitan racing continues at Mornington on Wednesday while on Saturday at Flemington the Lindsay Park team has nine horses nominated including Pago Rock in the Listed Straight Six.

He ran second to smart filly Lumosty second-up when the Robert Smerdon-trained filly produced an impressive three-length win in her return from a spell.

Lumosty is set to be among Pago Rock's rivals again as she continues on a path to Queensland feature races.

"I thought Pago Rock ran well last start so he's probably ready to do something," Dabernig said.

"Those older horses sometimes take a couple of runs to get to their top.

"I thought last start the winner was too good, but he ran a clear second. He's in good order."
