Winx swoops on field to win Guineas

Saturday 16 May 2015, 3:44pm

Sydney filly Winx has confirmed her favouritism for the Group One Queensland Oaks with a powerful win at the Sunshine Coast.

Winx ($2.60) came from second last place at the home turn to beat Ulmann ($26) by 1-3/4 lengths with a half length to Worthy Cause ($5.50) in Saturday's Group Three Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m).

It was her first start since she ran second to Gust of Wind in the Australian Oaks on April 11.

Trainer Chris Waller decided on the unusual path to the Oaks through the Sunshine Coast Guineas rather than the traditional lead-up the Doomben Roses next Saturday.

Waller wanted to keep Winx fresh and did not want to flatten her after the Australian Oaks run.

Co-owner Peter Tighe said Winx would go straight into the Queensland Oaks on May 30 without another run.

"Chris is a genius. He knows what to do," Tighe said.

"It was the plan to run today and then tackle the Oaks without another run."

"I was worried when she was so far back but she was the quality horse in the field. She would have broken 34 seconds for her last 600 metres which is really flying here."

The leader timed final 600m sectional was 34.93secs which meant Winx who was six lengths off, would have run 33.93.

Jockey Larry Cassidy rode Winx in the win but is no certainty to retain the ride.

"I leave all of that up to Chris and he will make the decision about the jockey," Tighe said.

Cassidy said he was worried he would have to come seven wide if he took off at the 600m mark so he elected to stay where he was at the tail of the field until the home turn.

"I thought I would wait and come out at the top of the straight. I knew I had the best horse under me and she certainly ran home strongly," Cassidy said.

Cassidy knows what it takes to win a Queensland Oaks having won it in 1996 on Arctic Scent who went on to win the Caulfield Cup.

"Winx is a class filly and she will be hard to beat in the Oaks," he said.

Luke Nolen, who rode Ulmann, said the colt had got up on the fence but Winx was too strong.

Queensland Derby hopeful Worthy Cause challenged for the lead at the 200m mark but was blown away by Winx.
