Royal Ascot bound Shamal Wind trials well

Monday 11 May 2015, 6:01pm

Royal Ascot-bound Shamal Wind has stepped up her preparation for the King's Stand Stakes with an easy trial at Cranbourne.

Starting from an inside barrier in the opening 800m heat on Monday morning, Shamal Wind was not asked to do much by apprentice Jackie Beriman, finishing seventh.

Beriman had the mare under a tight grip throughout with trainer Robert Smerdon saying the hit-out was exactly what was required.

The winner of the Group One Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield in February, Shamal Wind hasn't raced since that success.

Also engaged in Monday's trial were Goodwood hopefuls Lord Of The Sky and Under The Louvre who finished third and fifth respectively.

Shamal Wind is being aimed at a first-up tilt at the King's Stand Stakes (1000m) on the opening day of the five-day Royal Ascot meeting on June 16.

Smerdon said the mare was likely to have another trial to get her peak condition before she departed for the UK on June 3.

Following the King's Stand, connections are considering having her served by an English stallion to southern hemisphere time.

The Lindsay Park trained Criterion is already in England at John Gosden's Newmarket stable preparing for the Prince Of Wales's Stakes on the second day of Royal Ascot.

The Chris Waller-trained Brazen Beau has been nominated for the King's Stand and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes on the final day along with Wandjina from the Gai Waterhouse stable.

Waterhouse has also nominated two-year-old Cyrus Rocks for a new race, the Commonwealth Cup on June 19 with the John O'Shea-trained Holler also among the entries.

If they run in the race, they will compete as three-year-olds because of the difference in breeding cycles.
