Silverball stakes claim for Group races

Saturday 9 May 2015, 4:06pm

Silverball has raced in France to Hong Kong but has found his niche in Australia, stamping himself as a future topliner with an emphatic victory in the Lord Mayors Cup at Rosehill.

The Listed race brought the Chris Waller-trained gelding his third win from five Australian starts and his most important so far.

Four of his previous five wins had been at 1600m and the Cup was his first 2000m success.

Crunched from $5 to $3.80 favouritism, Silverball had the race in his keeping a long way out and stamped his authority in the straight to put 2-1/4 lengths on Sense Of Occasion ($12) with Destiny's Kiss ($16) another half neck third.

With Waller in Brisbane to oversee his team there, foreman Peter Muscutt said whatever the trainer had in mind might have to be revised upwards.

"He is a very, very good horse," Muscutt said.

"I think the team will sit down and reconsider the options.

"I'm sure Chris will assess things but you would think he would have to step up.

"It was a great ride by Brenton (Avdulla). It was an economical ride and the horse did the rest."

Avdulla has opted to stay in Sydney despite opportunities at the Brisbane winter carnival and is more than happy with his decision.

"I decided a few weeks ago to stay here and Chris has given me the opportunity to ride a horse like him," Avdulla said.

"He was always travelling like the winner. It was just a matter of when I decided to go.

"I moved up around the turn and he was going so well. It was arrogant in the end."
