Always Sacred wins at Ipswich debut

Wednesday 6 May 2015, 1:47pm

Two-year-old Always Sacred lived up to his barrier trial form and continued trainer Toby Edmonds's successful association with Segenhoe Stud at Ipswich on Wednesday.

Always Sacred had won three trials in impressive style and was backed from $3.20 to start the $2.60 favourite for his debut in the City Of Ipswich Handicap (1100m).

Despite being attacked for the lead for most of the trip, Always Sacred came away in the straight to post a strong three-quarters of a length win over Line Breaker.

Gold Coast-based Edmonds was pleased to see the youngster reproduce his trial form under race conditions.

"Always Sacred is a very good type of horse and his trials had been very good but you never know until you see them race," Edmonds said.

Edmonds has enjoyed success for some of Australia's biggest studs and has won around 30 races for Segenhoe Stud in the past two years.

Veteran jockey Jeff Lloyd partnered Always Sacred to victory, continuing his good run of form since he escaped serious injury in a spectacular fall at Doomben two weeks ago.

Lloyd, who rode a double on Saturday which included the Listed Weetwood Handicap on Mr Favulous, has ridden six winners for Edmonds in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, another South African-born jockey Robbie Fradd scored his first metropolitan win since a brief stint in Victoria when successful aboard Legal Hunter.

Fradd dropped Legal Hunter out to last from an outside barrier then swept around the field from the 600m to win the Ipswich Hospital Foundation Handicap by two lengths.
