Mick Kent apprentices off overseas

Friday 1 May 2015, 5:37pm

Victorian rider Ben Thompson will represent Australia in an apprentices only race in the United States.

The 18-year-old will follow in the footsteps of Regan Bayliss and Josh Cartwright when he contests the Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Apprentice World Championship in Kentucky on May 17.

He will ride a purebred Arabian galloper in the race and his trip will also include a visit to Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby.

With Thompson heading to the US, fellow apprentice Beau Mertens is off to France next month, representing Australia in the Prix Longines Future Racing Stars at Chantilly.

Jessica Payne represented Australia in the event last year.

Both Thompson and Mertens are indentured to Mick Kent at Cranbourne.
