Moore's Aussie dream backed by recent wins

Gary Moore has his legendary late father in mind as he toils at his Australian training dream.

But the son of the country's best-ever jockey George Moore won't be riding on the coat tails of his famous family name.

Himself a former international jockey, Gary Moore forfeited a successful 13-year-long training stint in Macau to move back to Sydney last year.

Since then he's had more success than he says he expected, winning two Group Three races with two-year-old Takedown.

The wins have proven Moore is not just a member of racing royalty.

The seven-time Macau premiership trainer is determined to "to train at the highest level" in Australia and compete with the likes of Chris Waller, Gai Waterhouse and Peter and Paul Snowden.

"Dad would expect it of me to come back and to train well," he said.

"I work very hard but I enjoy having these challenges."

Moore will start Straight Gold in the XXXX Gold Rush at Hawkesbury on Saturday.

The six-year-old will be ridden by Brenton Avdulla but the trainer admits he could struggle on a wet track.

Straight Gold had four starts for Moore in the spring after being transferred from Hong Kong where he was trained by his multiple premiership winning brother John.

Gary Moore and his son Nicholas applied for 24 boxes at Rosehill last August.

They are under no illusions about the task ahead of them, with Moore admitting the stable will need to house 100 horses to compete with the best.

He has now set his sights on a filly called Wutai Mountain as the next horse to attract attention to the business.

The two-year-old, who finished second to promising Godolphin colt Badajoz in her Hawkesbury debut, is slated for Scone's Woodland Stakes on May 16.
